UVB susceptibility as a risk factor to the development of lepromatous leprosy.

BACKGROUNDS Ultraviolet radiation B (UVRB) is the most important environmental factor capable of altering the immune function of human skin. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of the phenotypes of susceptibility or resistance to ultraviolet radiation B (UVRB) and the polar forms of leprosy. MATERIAL AND METHODS We evaluated 38 patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL) and 87 patients with t...

Immune reactivity in patients with colorectal cancer: assessment of biologic risk by immunoparameters.

The concept whether immune reactivity was intrinsically related to risk of recurrence was examined in 307 patients with rectal colon cancer, including 181 patients with primary resectable cancer, 48 patients with advanced primary operable cancer, and 78 patients with recurrence. Immune reactivity was measured by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) skin tests (219 patients) and by in vitro immunopar...

Leprosy in children: correlation of clinical, histopathological, bacteriological and immunological parameters.

The study of leprosy in children has indicated an incidence of 10% amongst leprosy patients attending the clinic. The duration of the disease was usually less than 2 years. The expression of leprosy in this group was either a macule and/or a plaque. Classification was, therefore, different and conforms to indeterminate (I), borderline tuberculoid (BT) and borderline (BB) leprosy. Only occasiona...

Cell-mediated immunity in patients with cervical cancer.

In 16 patients with cervical carcinoma (stages II and III) tumor-specific and general immune reactivity was investigated. Cancer patients' skin reactivity was different from that of controls insofar as there was a decreased response to streptokinase-streptodornase as well as to DNCB. Absence of DNCB sensitization was mainly in stage III patients. Cell-mediated immunity to autologous and/or allo...

Anergy to dinitrochlorobenzene and depression of T-lymphocytes in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Skin reactivity to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and levels of circulating T-lymphocytes were measured in 15 patients with ulcerative colitis, 15 patients with Crohn's disease, and 12 normal control subjects. Diminished reactivity to DNCB was demonstrated in 87% of patients with Crohn's disease (P less than 0-001) and in 53% with ulcerative colitis (P less than 0-02), as compared with only 8-5% o...
